Optimized Firefox 2.0.0.8 for Intel Macs

firefoxAnother month, another minuscule Firefox update with the minuscule version number is released. Firefox 2.0.0.8 is now available and I have put together Intel Mac optimized builds, available below.

(It’s sad that I can just update the version number in the above paragraph every time a new 2.x release comes out and it’s still completely valid. O Firefox 3, where art thou?)

Please do not email me bugging me for G4 builds as I just don’t have the time right now. I barely have nerd time for my newsreader, never mind building custom versions of a web browser for a CPU I don’t even use. :)

You can still download the G4 build of 2.0.0.3 here.

Here’s what’s new in 2.0.0.8 according to the Mozilla change notes:

  • Security fixes
  • Support for Mac OS X 10.5 (aka “Launching Next Friday!”)

That’s it!

Download

Intel Mac-optimized Firefox 2.0.0.8

G5-optimized Firefox 2.0.0.7 (thanks to the hard work of Stephen Saunders)

Why is the name / icon different?

I really shouldn’t have to keep repeating this, but every time I post a new Firefox release I still seem to get people annoyed / pissed off / confused as to why these builds are missing the Firefox name and icon. So here comes the strong emphasis:

The Firefox name and icon are trademarked and cannot be used with non-official builds. These are non-official builds, so they cannot have the official branding. Pretty straight-forward. Please don’t ask me to build versions with the official branding.

As always, feel free to post your thoughts / experiences / etc. in the comments. Enjoy!

The Intel aqua form widgets version displays a dark grey colored background in the dropdown form boxes, shouldn't it be white?

Thanks for putting these builds together.

Hey,

thanks for the builds. they are working great for me.
Could you by any chance let me have a look at your build configuration files like .mozconfig? That would be interesting for me, since I m trying to build firefox by myself.

Thanks & Regards

And mega-congratulations on the birth of your son Alec! Is it true that everyone's calling him "Bon Echo" because he's been deemed an unofficial build?

;-)

Love to all,

Hi,

I have a huge problem ! Since I upgraded from 2.0.0.4 to 2.0.0.5 (both optimized for Intel with aqua widgets), it doesn't recognize any of my extensions/themes. I also launched Firefox (from the Moz site) in both 2.0.0.4 and 2.0.0.5 version with the same problem.

In the add-ons window all my add-ons have the following message "This add-on will be installed when Firefox is restarted."

If I restart, it doesn't change a bit !

Anybody has any idea ???

Thanks,

Ritchie

I write not to pester, but to offer...

If you will provide the relevant source files/project/commands for Xcode to run with, I will devote as many CPU cycles as it takes to build the G4 versions (or at least the Aquafied one), and pass them/it back to you....

I need the G4 version because I'm still on a PowerBook, so the G5 doesn't help me, and until I can afford to bump to a MacBookPro, neither does the Intel...

First, I want to thank you for putting this out. I am a father of two (one 1 yr old and an 9 yr old) and I know how hard it is to find time to get things done that are non-kid related.

Anyway, I am writing to see if anyone else has the issues I'm seeing with 2.0.0.5: I have tons o' tabs open (which I admit could be the issue, but I don't see a direct correlation to my closing a tab). My CPU's (dual core) both spike to above 100% on the firefox (bon echo) process and the fan comes on.

Could this be due to a particular set of sites that I visit, i.e. Pandora.com, etc? Is there a configuraiton item I might set? I'm still trying to track what could be causing it, i.e. certain website or number of tabs, but nothing seems to correlate.

Any help from others here would be most appreciated.

Its September and I've been on version 2.0.0.4 of BonEcho for G5 since before July. I saw that you announced there would be no G4 version. You've said nothing about PPC G5 version although FF for Intel was upgraded to 2.0.0.5. Is there any hope for me? Or should I just revert back to Standard version of FireFox and leave you alone? I know that both updates have to do with security issues, just how vulnerable am I without those updates?

Still stuck on my PowerBook G4-7450, with much sadness I've shifted to ElFurbe's builds, for they are not Aqua-fied, and the widgets are UGLY, but they have kept up with the patches (which do matter to me) and even produce nightly builds. (I dunno, Neil, maybe they could help you script or otherwise automate builds, too?)

I share the link for others in the same boat --

Sorry, G5 users, no builds there for you. But G3 and G4-7400 users -- you win!

Hi Dyonisis,

Just installed ...7, same symptom. It thinks all my extensions are not compatible.

I'm using Safari a lot more now, and FF only when a site doesn't work in Safari.

Mozilla people don't fix enough bugs, they only care about security fixes. FF has so much memory leaks that I have to kill it about 5 times a day on my office PC !

Hello Ritchie,

Thank u for the reply.

I found out that there might be a bug in my firefox system files, so I performed a clean install .

you follow this path: /library/application support/firefox

and you delete the three files that are inside

you reistall firefox and it is accepting add ons and everything. But you have to install them maually from the beginning.

Hope this helps. I really dont understand why i wanted a damn update, my previous version worked like a charm. Next time I am going to think abot it before I make a quick update.

cHEERS,

hmmm... Firefox 2.0.0.11 has been out for quite awhile already... hope to see an update to this..

btw

those having problems, what you can try is to "Show Package Contents" of the application and "Get Info" on the folder "Contents"... under "Sharing and Permissions:" make sure you add all your users and put them as "Read & Write"...

finally, you "Apply to enclosed items" (can't rmb where in Tiger, but in Leopard you have to click on the nut button with an arrow on the right, beside the "-" button)..
