Optimized Firefox 2.0.0.1 for G4, G5, and Intel Macs

Updated January 6: G4-optimized versions are now available! I haven’t had much time to test these, but from what I can tell they work just fine.

I had a bit of time between jousting with other frantic last-minute Christmas shoppers and relaxing with my family to build some optimized versions of the recent Firefox maintenance release, nee version 2.0.0.1.

What’s new?

firefoxThe release notes on what’s new shows that this release is mainly bug fixes and security updates. If you want all of the gory details you can pop on over to the Mozilla site.

Update: Hey, it looks like this version fixes the “I hit command-w with only one tab open and the window won’t close” bug that 2.0 shipped with. Hooray! Oh, and it also looks like people just can’t be bothered to actually read this entire entry before commenting. Ah well.

New aqua form widgets and user agent tweakage

As usual there are two different versions available - one with “Firefoxy” form widgets applied, and one with the more OS X-looking aqua form widgets.

These builds are the first ones to have an overhauled version of the aqua form widgets. I’ve spent some time tweaking them to fix a bunch of the rendering and alignment issues found in earlier versions. Let me know if you notice anything looking out of place.

I have also tweaked the user agent so that these builds identify themselves as Firefox instead of BonEcho.

Download

Updated - A newer version is now available.

(Cutting and pasting this from the last update ‘cause I’m lazy and tired of having to repeat it)

Why is the name / icon different?

I really shouldn’t have to keep repeating this, but every time I post a new Firefox release I still seem to get people annoyed / pissed off / confused as to why these builds are missing the Firefox name and icon. So here comes the strong emphasis:

The Firefox name and icon are copyrighted and cannot be used with non-official builds. These are non-official builds, so they cannot have the official branding. Pretty straight-forward. Please don’t ask me to build versions with the official branding.

i just wanted to add my appreciation to everyone else's - when a firefox update comes out, all i think is "i hope that guy is going to build us a bonecho release, because i'm not installing that slow official build." you've pulled through again, and i'm grateful :-) keep up the awesome work

Thank you! I was wondering if you could provide any information on what exactly was changed on the firefox-intel-2.0.0.1-aqua.dmg.

There's a bug in Firefox that doesn't render properly certain non-Latin accented characters on Intel Macs. They're planning to fix it in Firefox 3 along with all the other Mac-related transitions, but in the meanwhile it'd be amazing if I could test a patch that's been going around on the optimized builds.

Thanks a lot,

thatha.

I don't really see what's so different about these versions. I downloaded both for the Intel Macs, but all I really see that's different from normal Firefox is the buttons.

I wasn't at all expecting you to do anything this so soon after that last post (totally understandable, btw), and I just happened to check your RSS feed this morning. I do very much hope you keep this going! LOVE having firefox with the aqua widgets!

Thanks huge. The aqua form elements are a nice improvement. Here's a question:

Is there any way to run BonEcho concurrently with Firefox? I did love the way BonEcho pulled up my firefox preferences automatically, but is there any way I can run them at the same time? I'd even be interested in being able to run both form versions of BonEcho concurrently.

Actually, I too have been wondering what optimisations your Intel builds would have over the official Intel Mac builds. I can understand that on Windows and Linux, optimising for Intel Core over a standard x86 processor could be quite beneficial. However I would imagine that since all Intel Macs are Intel Core or better, even the official build would be optimised for it. Or is this not the case?

Thanks,
Sam

Um, dewd, he doesn't have to do any of this, it's a volunteer effort, so telling him he has to keep supporting G4s gives you that air of toolishness.

2 seconds in Google led me to http://www.furbism.com/firefoxmac/ which might have what you want.

Just a question : what happens with automatic updates ? does it break your build or do you have a way to include only "patches" and keeping Intel optimization, while keeping up with security updates ?

For those of us that are slow, if I already have the official Firefox 2 release installed, can I install this update, or do I first have to install Neil's optimized version 2 before the 2.0.0.1?
And what does this do exactly again?
Thanks in advance,

This release is indeed fast and so far the only issue I've come across with the aqua widgets is on the Yahoo page's search bar where the button extends into the search field. I've had similar issues occur with Camino, so it's most likely a problem with the way the aqua gizmos deal with certain CSS codes or something.

To "cross-build" as you put it an optimized build for another processor, all you have to do is simply change the optimization flags! A build compiled with -mcpu=G4 or whatever optimizations you use on G4s, can be compiled on a G5 too, and it'll run just fine on a G4.

I'm not sure why there's no G5 version with Firefoxy. But you can still use this program to add Firefoxy widgets to your app (just tell it you have v1.5; it works):

Is there a chance I can donate some bucks to you because I believe in the fact that good work or craftmanship should always get paid.

Thanks also for not forgetting us old G4/G5_Users.

Great, fast version of Firefox, thank you so much for building it! Does anyone else have weird widget problems? The aqua widgets have text that is still a bit too small for my eyes, so I went to Firefoxy-ify this build (since there's no Firefoxy widget build of the G5 opt. version provided directly -- might be nice) and it seems to work if you tell Firefoxy that it is 1.5. But, when I open up the app I see a (not altogether uninteresting) mix of aqua and Firefoxy widgets. For example, checkboxes and dropdowns are aqua, whereas form fields and submit buttons are Firefoxy. Kinda cool, but then again kinda not. Any way to make all widgets Firefoxy? Btw, I'm also running Uno (system-wide unified look) and the GrApple (UNO) theme with this build.

Post a reply to this comment

You need to make Bon Echo your default browser. On the BonEcho pref panel click the "Check Now" button in the lower right (on the Main tab). This will allow you to set BonEcho as the system-wide default browser- the browser QuickSilver will use.

If you have both FireFox and BonEcho installed. If this is the case you may need to delete FireFox.

Good luck.

Two ways to make it the default -
In Safari | Preferences | Main
Select BonEcho as the default

In BonEcho | Preferences | Main
under System Preferences, check the box to make 'firefox' your default.
