Optimized Firefox 1.5.0.6 for G4, G5, and Intel

Updated 19.08.06: Firefox 1.5.0.6 builds are now available for download. Because the only change in 1.5.0.6 is a bug fix for playing Windows media content I’ve simply updated this post with new download links.

firefoxOkay, okay: you can stop haranguing me now - optimized builds of Firefox 1.5.0.6 are now available for G4, G5, and Intel Macs.

These teensy updates from the happy nerds at the Mozilla corporation are starting to become a monthly occurrence, but hey, if it wasn’t for these you’d never come ‘round for a visit, right?

Here’s the changelog:

Firefox 1.5.0.6:

  • Fixed an issue with playing Windows Media content

Firefox 1.5.0.5:

  • Improvements to product stability
  • Added changes for Frisian locale (fy-NL)
  • A literal clambake of security fixes

That’s it. I suppose the Frisians out there must be happy with these changes, but I for one am looking forward to when a Firefox changelog is longer than three lines. Firefox 2.0, don’t fail me now.

As with previous optimized releases the G4 and Intel builds come with both Firefoxy form widgets as well as the more integrated and mac-like aqua form widgets. The G5 version is aqua form widgets only.

The usual spiel: these builds are called DeerPark and doesn’t have the official icon because the Firefox name and branding are reserved for official release; this comes with zero support (read: you’re on your own); I’m not responsible if anything medieval should transpire.

Oh, and in lieu of donations I highly recommend you take your destiny into your own hands and buy those pants you’ve been thinking about. Black leather pants in the middle of the summer? Now that’s hardcore.

Downloads

A newer version of Firefox is now available: Go and get it.

Intel Mac Firefoxy 1.5.0.5 version DMG fails to mount. Reason - Codec Overrun. Any ideas?

The Aqua widgets version mounts just fine.

Intel Mac Firefoxy 1.5.0.5 version DMG fails to mount for me as well. Same Reason - Codec Overrun. Is everyone having this problem?

I'm having the same issue as JIJOE. Cleared my cache and downloaded the Intel Mac Firefoxy 1.5.0.5 DMG three times and each time it fails to mount with the Codec Overrun error. Looks like the file got corrupted.

The aqua version mounts fine for me too.

Thanks for the great work. I love these builds.

Any chance you could build/post optimized Thunderbird releases?

Thanks

"major streaming video bug in 1.5.0.5 - 1.5.0.6 on the way"

Crap. Well, assuming they don't suddenly update to 1.5.0.7 immediately after releasing 1.5.0.6 I'll just update this entry with new builds.

I really need to figure out how to get the update server thing working so I can push out these teensy updates without having to rebuild...

Unfortunately, with 1.505 for G4 (with Aqua forms, calling URLs from bookmarks doesn't work, no matter whether selecting a URL from Bookmark menu or using a bookmark 'keyword' shortcut... anybody else experience this?

Just curious - How come you don't offer G5-optimized Firefox 1.5.0.5 with Firefoxy form widgets?

nessa - i think it was mentioned in an earlier post that neil no longer has a G5 so the build here was contributed by one of his friends, who's the one who doesn't want to make firefoxy-widget versions.

(neil, you might want to expand your FAQ to include this, and not just the "Deer Park 'cos I don't have the copyright" thing? actually ... I don't want to sound like a broken record but I think if you did a grep on the source and changed the menu item to say it's "Deer Park" and not "firefox" it would help a bit, make it more clear that it's "deer park", not some half-deer-half-fox thingie. In any case I promise I shall mention this no more :-).

i'm actually wondering if the 1.5.0.6 "update" is so critical. Does the windows media problem even affect the Mac versions? flip4mac seems to work ok for me.

Great googly-moogly, are those Mozilla folks deliberately messing with you, Neil? Will they start releasing new Firefox updates every other day? As for the update server you mentioned, I presume that this would enable your legions of grateful Deer Park fans to merely select the Check for Updates option in the Help menu. Considering how this would benefit both you and us, I heartily encourage and applaud your efforts in that direction. (BTW, for further African music enjoyment, do check out Bembeya Jazz from Guinea, and Jaojoby from Madagascar.)

They just put out Firefox 1.5.0.6 ... are you going to release an optimized version? I see no problems with the optimized 1.5.0.5 but I'm just wondering.

Any plans on creating a Firefox 2.0 beta custom build for the Intel platform (Macbook Pro)???

PS: How do you create these builds? Can a non coder do it on their computer easily?

Thanks.

You can get the Firefoxy widgets for the G5 build of Firefox.

Just use this patcher:
http://www.amake.us/software/firefoxy/

It was the first result on a Google search for "Firefoxy".   :¬)

Thanks so much for these G4-optimized versions! I've been using them since your first, and normally they've worked really, really well.

This update's been hanging a lot on my G4 Powerbook, though. I haven't been home to try it on my Mac Mini. Any suggestions?

Awesome job! Thanks so much! Been running the G4 version in my iBook for since 1.5.0.4 and the difference in speed is definitely noticible.

Previously I'd been using Camino but I really missed some of the features of Firefox. I hated how the "official" Firefox release felt sluggish though. This works much better!

Out of curiosity, is there a post somewhere stating how to compile this if I'd want to myself? No need for links. If someone says it's there I can go hunt for it.

Thanks so much once again!

Am using 1.5.0.2 build and seem to have a memory leak. Everytime I use this Firefox version my computer seems to over heat and the fan starts running at high speed. Anyone else seen a problem like this? Does not happen with normal programs or OEM Safari.
