G4 and G5-optimized Firefox 1.5.0.3 now available (updated)

Man, I really wish the Mozilla guys would stop pooping out these teensy version updates. At any rate, optimized builds of Firefox 1.5.0.3 for the G4 and G5 processors are now available.

Here’s the changelog:

Firefox 1.5.0.3

  • Security fix for a denial of service vunerability.

Firefox 1.5.0.2

  • Universal Binary support for Mac OS X which provides native support for Macintosh with Intel Core processors. Firefox supports the enhancements to performance introduced by the new MacIntel chipsets. (Obviously this isn’t applicable to these builds).
  • Improvements to product stability.
  • A whack of security fixes

That’s it. No mood-enhancing flavonoids, no brand new widgety-doodads, and no life-reaffirming Yngwie Malmsteen guitar solos; just bug fixes and “product stability”. But you asked for optimized builds, so here they are.

Updated: For now, there are G4 builds with the aqua native form widgets and Firefoxy form widgets, and a G5 build with aqua form widgets only.

If you’ve a G5 and looking for a Firefoxy build I sadly won’t be able to help you. I no longer own a G5 machine and all of the G5 builds that appear on this site are provided by my building partner Voon Siong Wong.

Downloads

As usual, comments are welcome, but I’m not responsible if these builds slap you in the face and call you a Dungeons and Dragons weenie (or, god forbid, crash). And for the last time, the Firefox icon and name can only be distributed with official builds. Sorry for yelling, but I’m getting pretty tired of people sending me angry emails asking the same question over and over again.

At any rate, enjoy.

(Neil, who is in dire need of strong caffeine and a muffin right about now).

(Looking for bleeding edge Firefox 2.0 nightly builds? G5-optimized versions are here. I’ll post a new Intel optimized build soon, too.)

I like the firefoxy widgets... if you have time to build that version that would be excellent...

Thanks for all the effort you put into these :-)

Thanks from me, too, Neil. I've been yet another frequent visitor during the past several days.

BTW, the Bloglines problem about which a few of us commented following the release of your G5-optimized FF 1.5.0.1 does not occur in this new version. Ah, relief!

Hope the caffeine was potent and the muffin was fresh....

A version with Firefoxy widgets would indeed be much appreciated. I find the bottom portion of the aqua widgets get truncated too much and too often for day-to-day use. Many thanks for these fantastic builds! :D

Just wanted to add my thanks to those expressed by others. I, too, have been visiting your site two or three times a day lately, hoping that you would indeed post optimized PPC versions for G4 and G5 Macs. I was even starting to worry that you might have decided to only create optimized versions for Macs with Intel processors. Glad I was wrong. Again, thanks Neil, for continuing to tweak 'em up in a variety of flavors and make 'em all available.

Thanks, either way.

How does one go about compiling a native version of Firefox from source? I have a G5 and would be glad to offer some time and services to do a Firefoxy G5 build, but sadly, I have no idea how to do it. Where should I start looking?

Thanx for this. This runs a ton better on my 1Ghz iMac than the standard build.

As for the people that were complaining about the icon and name on the previous builds, there is an easy to fix this. First, move your original Firefox.app to a different folder than this build. Go to you freshly moved Firefox and right (or control) click it and select "Show Package Contents. In the finder window that pops up click the Contents folder, then the Resources folder. Next, copy Firefox.icns.

Now, navigate to your DeerPark.app, right click, show package contents, click contents, then resources, paste Firefox.icns, click yes to replace. Next, rename DeerPark.app to Firefox.app, drag it to your Dock, and there you have it.

1.5.0.3 out...

I really like the job you do compiling firefox with native widgets for G4, but it looks like firefox just got updated again for security reasons : 1.5.0.3 is out... I don't want to urge you, but I'll be checking your website now and then ;-)

Could you post a tutorial in order for us to help you make these builds available?

Thank you

Thank you very much for this very nice distribution. A small suggestion for improving it is to incorporate Emacs-like keybindings as described in this mozillazine article(Firefox)

Thank you, sir, may I have another?

Another optmized-for-G4-version of the new 1.5.0.3 release, that is. Maybe the Firefox folks are just deliberately messing with you now by releasing yet another new version so soon after 1.5.0.2 came out.

Christine,
use the extension «Quick Locale Switcher »
you can get it from here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1333
I use it myself with G5-optimized Firefox and de-locale.
And thank you for all the work, Neil !
BTW Is there any hope to see a G5 1.5.0.3 despite you lost your G5 ?

I used this solution instead now and it works perfect:

Since the optimized builds are only available in English, this is how You can change the language of the Firefox/DeerPark User Interface. This is an example for version 1.5.0.3 and the German language, it should work with all versions and all languages.

  1. Install the Extension Language Switcher
  2. Go to http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.5.0.3/win32/xpi/ in Your Web browser. ("/win32/" is okay, it works.)
  3. Click on de.xpi for the German language or choose the appropriate language and install it when asked.
  4. Restart Firefox/DeerPark and choose Your language from the Menu "Tools/Languages".
  5. Restart DeerPark again.
  6. Finished. The User Interface should be in the desired language now.

heya, does anyone know what versions of OS X these builds will run on (as opposed to processor architecture)? like, the official firefox builds are supposed to run all the way up to 10.2 - does that apply to these builds as well? (i'm guessing not the G5 build since 10.2 pre-dated the G5)

Are these builds for Tiger only? what about Panther and Jaguar?

thanks!!

am I missing something here ?

47 | Build6 said on May 18, 2006 4:31 AM

Mulan - what kind of instructions are you looking for?

the first line of this post includes "a G5-optimized build of Firefox" which seems pretty self-explanatory. it's ... a G5 optimized build of Firefox. So the fact that it opens up as "firefox" ... is the whole point.

it's also been pointed out that it's called Deer Park and not "firefox" because of trademark issues (Neil - you might want to search-and-replace the source for the menubar reference to "firefox"? could maybe help reduce the number of this kind of complaint... it's not so much that it's called deer park that is a problem, but the inconsistency (menubar says firefox, "about" option and app name says deer park).

Post a reply to this comment
48 | build6 said on May 18, 2006 4:35 AM

sajdak - if you're still having problems, the problem is on your end not the server. no problem getting the download, server is up.

brett - i've encountered a problem like that before (not from downloads from here), IIRC there's an issue with the system cache and/or the download may not be complete. you might need to reboot (fix disk permissions with disk utility?) and redownload the app before a disk image will mount.

ok well i'm not complaining was just confused he he

so far I have not seen any real change with this deerpark, it looks the same as firefox, when you say optimized do you mean performance or the look ?

thanks

Deerpark is the application - a simply ctrl-i in the Finder after selecting it reveals it's mysteries. :-)
