G4 and G5-optimized Firefox 1.5.0.1 now available

Alrighty, folks - I’ve just finished building optimized versions of the new Firefox 1.5.0.1 release. There are builds available for both the G4 and and G5 processor.

Here’s the changelog as writ by the Mozilla folks:

  • Improved stability.
  • Improved support for Mac OS X.
  • International Domain Name support for Iceland (.is) is now enabled.
  • Fixes for several memory leaks.
  • Several security enhancements.

All great, especially the OS X support and IDN support for Iceland. I’m all about the Iceland. Get the full details in all of their nerdy glory from the Burning Edge.

Form Widgets a go-go

Each processor’s build is available in two separate flavours - one with aqua form widgets, that look like this:

aqua form widgets

… and one that has the Firefoxy form widgets, that look like this:

firefoxy widgets

What’s the big difference? Besides the obvious visual differences, the main key notable is that the aqua form widgets are not affected by styles, and the Firefoxy widgets are. So if a site you’re visiting has applied visual styles to the form widgets, you won’t see them with the aqua widgets. Not a huge deal, but some people prefer to see a site as the designer intended it so I’m making both available.

G4-optimized Firefox 1.5.0.1 builds

This is if you’re running a Powerbook, an iBook from the last three years or so, an eMac, Power Mac towers before June of 2003, or a Mac Mini.

Download the G4-optimized Firefox 1.5.0.1 release (disabled) A newer version than this is now available

G5-optimized Firefox 1.5.0.1 builds

You’ll know if you’re running a G5.

Download the G5-optimized Firefox 1.5.0.1 release (disabled) A newer version than this is now available

Because I constantly have to answer these questions, I’ll get them out of the way here:

  1. These are unofficial builds and come with absolutely no support or warranty. I am not a Firefox developer and cannot fix bugs, troubleshoot issues on your system, listen to you rant about how much you hate Firefox, etc. There are better places for that.
  2. The reason these are called “DeerPark” and don’t have the swank Jon Hicks Firefox icon is because both the icon and the Firefox name are trademarks of the Mozilla corporation, and only official builds can use the official branding.
  3. No, I’m not accepting donations - hell, all I’m doing is entering a few commands and swapping a few things around. The builds are hosted on my .Mac account, so Apple is covering the bandwidth. I appreciate the thought, but I’m cool.

Enjoy, and feel free to post your thoughts (bearing the above in mind) in the comments.

Thanks again for your work on this. One question though: one of the key reasons for FF1.5's existence was updates through patches. Is there no way to integrate this into your builds? Arguably your server traffic would be lower.

Merci Monsieur :-) Deerpark (G5) has quickly become by default browser as a web developer, I like Firefox, but it's form widgets suck.

Right on dude, this is great. You are doing a great service to Mac users by doing this grunt work for us.

While I have no official benchmarks to prove it, Deerpark G4 feels much more responsive on my Dual 1ghz G4 than the regular non-optimized G4.

Thanks a lot for doing this!

I've been using the previous version for a while, however I've got a decidedly odd problem with the new version which I put on last night (the Firefoxy widget version).

If I go onto the MyBlogs list on Bloglines, which runs in frames with the bloglist in the left frame, and a view of the current blog in the right hand side, whenever I click on a blog on the left hand list it kicks off an untitled tab that comes up empty, and does nothing in the right hand side.

Concerning the Icon... could you use this one ? I always change it manually. Maybe the author would agree. I still like to have a firefox-like icon (and a good looking one).

Stupid question... why doesn't this get integrated in the firefox page? Have you ever contacted them asking to get your builds at least linked?

I think this version broke bloglines.com for me. When I click on items in bloglines a new window opens and nothing happens. This started happening just today when I upgraded to the new version.

Thought you should know. Thanks for this browser!

When using Bloglines, I get these two errors:

Error: unterminated string literal
Source File: http://bloglines.com/myblogs_subs?date=1139398923
Line: 1, Column: 29
Source Code:
clickOnLink('subid19604247', 'javascript:doLoadf(33,19604247,1363666) target=

Error: missing ; before statement

Line: 1, Column: 29
Source Code:
doLoadf(33,19604247,1363666) target=

They only occur when I click on a feed item. They don't occur when I click on a folder of feeds.

Also, using standard Firefox, I don't get the errors? Very Odd!

I'm not sure what to tell you guys - I use Bloglines every day and have never seen an issue with these builds. The only thing I can suggest is to try starting with a new profile.

Go under your Application Support folder > Firefox and change the name of Profiles.ini to something different (like Profiles.ini-original). Then restart Firefox and that should get it to generate a clean user profile.

If it still doesn't work, you can revert back to your old profile by deleting the new Profiles.ini file and renaming the old one to its original name.

Any chance the original 1.5 build can be made available? On my G5 Panther, Firefox 1.5.0.1 (Official build, not G5 optimised) was a mess.

Particularly there was a major issue with the windows, which kept jumping around and re-aligning themselves as if magical magents were pulling them around. I had to roll back to 1.5.

I've been having exactly the same problem with Bloglines since I updated to this build of FF 1.5.0.1, even after reinstalling it and creating a brand new profile: no extensions, no preference settings altered, etc.

I have even tried changing my Bloglines options regarding window use (same vs. new, etc.); no luck.

Just FYI.

Totally weird. Okay, just for the record, please answer these questions if you've been having issues with Bloglines:

  • Type of build (G4 or G5)
  • Aqua or "standard" form widgets
  • What you're clicking on that isn't working in Bloglines

Thanks.

I'm running the build with the "standard" ("Firefoxy") widgets, I believe: Firefox-ppx970-1501.dmg is the name of the downloaded file.

On Bloglines.com, I click on one of the feeds in the "My Feeds" list that appears in the frame on the left. Instead of displaying that feed's unread entries in the main frame on the right, FF opens a tab that says (Untitled) and then shows "Done" in the status bar. The content of the main frame is unchanged, and the same number of entries remain unread for that feed, so Bloglines isn't registering the selection. (BTW, this happens regardless of whether there are unread entries for a given feed: clicking on any feed's name in the "My Feeds" list produces the same result.)

This problem has occurred with Bloglines since I first installed the 1.5.0.1 G5-optimized build on the day you made it available, but I've had no such difficulties on any other site. All previous G5-optimized FF builds have worked fine with Bloglines.

Today I moved my working ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox folder to the Desktop and installed a fresh copy of the optimized G5 build, which of course created a brand new profile. Same problem with Bloglines.

So I restored my working ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox folder, downloaded and installed Mozilla's Firefox 1.5.0.1 release, and Bloglines works just fine, displaying the feed's unread entries in the main frame on the right.

As it stands now, I'm running Mozilla's FF to access Bloglines.com, and your G5-optimized FF everywhere else -- a PITA, of course. Help! (And thanks very much for all the optimized builds -- they're great! :-)

I was using the G5 version with Aqua widgets. I wasn't able to click on any of the links for "my blogs" to actually read any feeds. Like someone else said - when I clicked one, an empty tab would open instead.

P.S. Out of curiosity, I downloaded and tried firefox-ppc970-1501-aqua.dmg with Bloglines, and the problem as I described it in my previous posts is exactly the same in this build.

Then I downloaded and tried the latest nightly G5 Firefox that's available here, 20060207-FX.dmg. Poof! The problem has disappeared in this G5 build and Bloglines works exactly as it should.

Hopefully this additional info will help you track down and eliminate the glitch in the current G5 Firefox 1.5.0.1 release. Thanks in advance! :-)

There's no reason that these builds can't be called Firefox, calling them DeerPark is just stupid.

Hundreds of Linux distributors include their own optimised builds of Firefox and don't call their builds Deerpark or Whorehouse or whatever mozilla's code name for the latest build is.

Stop being a stupid ass and build them with the proper name.

Many Thanks, of course. I was wondering why I shouldn't just compile my own optimized version of firefox whenever they release the code? Probably the obvious answer 'you should if you want to.' But I was also wondering what sort of benchmarks there are out there to compare performance.

Thanks again,
J

Well done - a solution to the up and down arrows seemingly not working on the keyboard is to go to preferences --> Advanced --> General Tab and under Accessibility UNCHECK (yes uncheck) alllow text to be selected with keyboard.

Re: Comment #9: Firefox-ey icon

I grabbed this icon. I like the "official" icon, but this one is nice too. I prefer it to the naked globe provided here as a substitute for the official icon.

I took the firefox icon linked to in comment #9 and added a white "G5" on top of it, so it looked more like the ones supplied with the builds here, and was more clear what one was running.

If you'd like me to make a "G4" one, and/or supply either of the ones I made, let me know. I'd be happy to.

#35, that just depends on whether or not you need the extensions. If you do not use them, Camino is MUCH faster than any optimized (or not) version of Firefox because it`s written in Cocoa.

Great work. I've been a big fan of your G5-optimized builds for awhile.

Does anybody know why clicking and holding the mouse button down on a page in Firefox sends processor usage through the roof? (Check Activity Monitor) It seems to be a problem with the "official" and the G5-optimized builds. I keep hoping they'd fix it with each build they release...

This DeerPark build (1.501) breaks the "drop a URL into a bookmarks toolbar folder" functionality that is in the regular build. Instead of going into the folder the URL is placed as an individual bookmark in the toolbar.

Also how can I have Firefox and Deer Park coexhist on the same machine and still set Deer Park as the default browser? By checking make firefox my default browser it uses firefox.app instead of deer park.app like I want.

It definitely seems faster than FF regular, but a lot of images of pages are broken for me, that is, that don't appear at all. I don't recall tweaking any of the settings so I can't imagine why this would be happening. (Everything else displays correctly.)

Is there any way we can get a G4-optimized build with the normal Firefox form widgets? I'm a web developer, and it would be foolish for me to use a browser that displays form widgets differently than my entire audience. (Yeah, I know most of them are using MSIE anyway, but still...)

49 | Kerim Friedman said on April 5, 2006 1:33 AM

Thanks for doing this! While I appreciate the speed, I would request that you stop calling them "DeerPark", as doing so causes many third-party extensions to stop working. Actually, they work fine, but you can't install the extensions because they think that they are incompatible. The problme is that "DeerPark” refers to an earlier - developer build of Firefox, and thus confuses the extensions into thinking that I'm running the wrong version of Firefox. The only way to fix it is to run the standard Firefox build and then install the extensions, and then switch back. That is a bit of a pain!

I would suggest the following to Kerim Friedman, who posted on 5 April that it was "a bit of a pain" to launch the non-optimized standard build of Firefox in order to load extensions before they are available in the Deer Park optimized version: Gain some freakin' perspective in your life, sonny. Do you honestly find it all that difficult to launch the standard Firefox once a week or so, in order to perform such simple and relatively brief tasks? Perhaps you can ask a concerned family member to come over and do that for you, while you avert your gaze. Then they can cut your food into bite-sized pieces for you, and maybe even pre-chew them a bit -- 'cuz, y'know, mastication is also a bit of a pain. Good grief...
