G5-optimized Firefox 1.0.6 released

Welcome, Macworld readers! Due to the lag time between article writing and publishing, the Macworld link is an old one. Follow this link to get the most recent G5-optimized Firefox version.

Looking for the G5-optimized nightly builds of Firefox? Head on over this way.

firefoxWell golly, it’s another Firefox release. I’ll try to keep this brief - here’s the changelog for this release:

  • Restore API compatibility for extensions and web applications that did not work in Firefox 1.0.5.

This was built on Mac OS X 10.4.2 using XCode 2.1 and has not been tested on Mac OS X 10.3 but should work just fine. Mac OS X 10.2 is not supported. This is not an official build, your mileage may vary, there are no guarantees in life, etc., etc..

As always, please post any observations or major issues that you cannot reproduce using the official release in the comments.

Download the G5-optimized Firefox 1.0.6 release (disabled) A newer version than this is now available

I have created a special BeatnikPad Mozilla / Firefox feed for those of you who are interested in just Firefox and other Mozilla-related updates. See how much I care?

For those of you who want the full BeatnikPad feed (which includes Firefox updates) you can use this feed instead. Enjoy!

I can't seem to open the 1.0.6 build. It downloads as a ".bz2" file.

What do I need to do to open it??

Thanks,
WSG

Just installed this (and replaced the icon -- phew!). Haven't noticed any noticable speed improvement so far, at least in UI responsiveness (tab responsiveness being my main issue with FF's speed on OS X.) Am I maybe doing something wrong? (I used the same profile as I had for the vanilla 1.0.6 build.)

For those of you who don't know -- to replace the generic "globe" icon with the original FF icon, "Show Package Contents" on both applications, open the "Contents -> Resources" folder on in both, and replace the G5-optimized-build's "document.icns" and "firefox.icns" files with the ones from the vanilla Firefox app. Bingo! (You might need to logout-login before the icon shows up in the Finder, but it should display in the dock as soon as you launch FF.)

PS:

a) There seems to be an error in your TypeKey signin -- I got an error page, anyway. Something about not having permission to access a CGI script.
b) You are awesome for including the quasi-OS X widgets. They're great! Thank you.

I can't seem to copy the app into any folder from the disk image. I'm given error -8065, any ideas?

I can run it from the disk image, but that's hardly the same!

WrongSizeGlass: Stuffit Expander can decompress .bz2 files. I'll start just building disk images instead of compressing the files, too - the savings is pretty minimal, anyway.

Adam: I know about the typekey error. It's because I'm disallowing direct access to the comment CGI script from offsite referrers to stop comment spam. I'll see if I can figure out a way to get it to work while still protecting the script from external access.

David: Don't know what that error is, but the disk image is valid, so there must be something amiss on your system. Maybe run disk utility first?

Hey Neilo -- though I still give you credit for including the OS X native widgets in your build, I think I'd like to remove them. (They break the layout of a few pages -- not many, but I'm a web designer so I can't have anamolous elements in my web browser.) Could you possibly post instructions for removing them, or at least reference the precise widgets that are installed? (For instance, they appear to be Kevin Geriches's widghets from http://www.kmgerich.com/archive/000072.html , but are they exactly?)

Adam - check out Firefoxy - it should do what you're looking for.

I got error 8065 as well. It seems to be caused when you try to copy the firefox.app into a directory that already contains Firefox.app (Maybe it's a case issue?). The error even occurred when I copied the app to my desktop, and then tried to move it from there into Applications.

After renaming the program to "Firefox G5", it copied successfully.

Thanks for your time to create this great build. I was already using firefox but this one is an improvement. I haven't notice a problem myself but had an issue when my Girlfriend tried to use it on the same machine.
When she started firefox the icon in the doc was bouncing up and down but nothing happened. In the system monito I saw that the program was started, stopped and started again, everytime increasing the PID.
Tried it several times, deleted the firefox settings folder from her home dir. but no luck.
She started the standard firefox and it was launched. After that she was able to start your build. Looks like something goes wrong when there is no profile yet.
