G5-optimized Firefox 1.0.2 released

firefoxOkay, everyone is probably used to this by now, but to reiterate, the G5-optimized version of Firefox 1.0.2 is now available.

According to the Mozilla foundation this is purely a security fix release, which remedies the following arcane nerd issues:

  • Drag and drop loading of privileged XUL
  • Arbitrary code execution from Firefox sidebar panel
  • GIF heap overflow parsing Netscape extension 2

Apparently that last one is a doozy, and as such this is a highly recommended update for anyone running these optimized builds. This build is identical to the release version, with the following exceptions:

  • There is a different application icon (unofficial builds like this cannot use the official Firefox icon)
  • Includes the “pretty” form widgets by Kevin Gerich
  • Chock full of speed and swagger - well, in theory, at least. I haven’t done any benchmarks because I’m a lazy ass.
  • Creates world peace, enhances sexual prowess, improves overall muscle tone, and imbues user with the brilliant wit of Dorothy Parker. Or not.

Download Firefox 1.0.2

Download the G5-optimized Firefox 1.0.2 release (disabled) A newer version than this is now available.

As usual, this is an unofficial build which is not supported by anyone, though I might try to help out with an issue if you email me or post a friendly comment below.

Feedback, complaints, compliments, and non-gender or race-based jokes welcome in the comments. Ranting or bitching about Firefox, Mac-integration conspiracies, or anything else will be treated with derision and swiftly mocked.

(Neil, pondering whether or not he should just change the name of this site to “Firefox’s manservant” and be done with it.)

Update (July 20): I have created a special BeatnikPad Mozilla / Firefox feed for those of you who are interested in just Firefox and other Mozilla-related updates. See how much I care?

For those of you who want the full BeatnikPad feed (which includes Firefox updates) you can use this feed instead. Enjoy!

If you want to stop being Firefox's manservant real quick, just start charging a buck a download. Watch your mac-related traffic drop 97.2 % overnight. :D

Works great. Thanks for taking the time to work on this and make it available. I love the improved performance and more Mac-like widgets.

downloaded new version (1.0.2) to replace my previous version. Now I can't find my bookmarks or scrapbook on the old version and so can't import them into the new. Help at the Mozilla website only seems to apply to Windows versions. Any suggestions please?

I swear by Firefox on the PC, but on the Mac I still feel Safari is superior.

Safari STILL has issues, and one of the biggest is it doesn't play well with our school SIS. So next school year IE will be banned (even though I heard MS WILL indeed support a new Mac build) and we will support either Safari or FireFox.
This G5 build is EXCELLENT, by the way.

Great work! Unfortunately for me, for some strange reason the extensions manager comes up blank (but all extensions are active) on the 1.0.2 G5 build but not on the 1.0.1 or 1.0 builds. Am I the only one experiencing this?

Other than that, this is very nice.

I downloaded the new version (1.0.2) to replace my previous version. Now I can't use the wheel button to open new tab. But I could do that in 1.0.1. This is very important to me. I don't wanna right click, select open new tab, and click again to open a new tab.
Please fix it, please~~~
It's all good another that, nice one!!

Closing windows problem!
Sometimes certain windows/tabs refuse to close with Command-W. It seems to happen when a page doesn't load fully. However, the cancel button is unavailable too.

Okay, for speed this is a real champ, maybe the fastest available (what does "G5 optimized" mean? That this is actually a 64--bit-friendy build? But speed isn't the only desirable feature in a browers. Browsers like Safari and Omni do a vastly better job of displaying texts, some typographical features (such as non-Latin ranges of Unicode glyphs) are downright unpleasant to look at. For me the chief interest of this build is to give me a preview of what I hope other and better browsers can do soon.

Simply the best browser bar none on my G5 1.6 & OS 10.4, despite a few minor issues with frames and rarely, java which seem to affect all Firefox versions. Nevertheless, it blows Safari 2.0 away. Seriously.
