G5-optimized Firefox nightly builds

July 7th: Thanks to the wily geek powers of Voon Siong Wong, we now have a reasonably consistent source for nightly Firefox G5 builds. Voon was nice enough to allow me to link directly to his builds from here, as quite a few people have this page bookmarked. I’ll update this page with new build links as they appear.

You might want to check out the mozillazine thread, too.

firefoxI’ve started building G5-optimized Firefox again, this time pulling from the latest nightly code. Thanks to everyone who sent in compliments, complaints, and feedback on the previous set of builds.

For those who missed it the first time around, these unofficial builds have been created with optimizations for Apple’s G5 processor, found in the more recent Powermacs and the latest iMac models. They should be faster and more responsive than the official builds. You can read more about these builds and comments from users in the initial post.

Keep in mind that because these builds are being created from the most recent, mostly untested Firefox code, there will be bugs, missing features, and other stuff. In other words:

If you are not comfortable using pre-release software, don’t use these builds.

» Download

(Looking for the G5-optimized Firefox 1.5 release build? You can download it from this entry.)

Starting with the March 17th build the new development name for Firefox has changed from DeerPark to Bon Echo, in case you were wondering why the application is called that. Again, don’t yell at me - I don’t set the name, I just build the thing.

New September 1: G5-optimized Firefox 2.0 beta 2

The latest build was created on September 5:
» Download the 20060906 build

Previous nightly builds
» Download the 20060901 build
» Download the 20060825 build
» Download the 20060822 build

As with the previous builds, please post in the comments how these builds are working for you.

Update (July 20): I have created a special BeatnikPad Mozilla / Firefox feed for those of you who are interested in just Firefox and other Mozilla-related updates. See how much I care?

For those of you who want the full BeatnikPad feed (which includes Firefox updates) you can use this feed instead. Enjoy!

how about a new application icon? i like the one in use for the G4 builds, maybe the author will let you use them as well.

Really great, I've been using it since November (1.0 verson). Much faster on my G5 than the regular Firefox 1.0 build.

Just a bug report, also sent to the Firefox peeps:

When all windows are closed, except the Download Window, keyboard comands such as cmnd-N no longer word. That is to say, when Downloads is the only window open, I must close it first before opening a new window via keyboard (works with menu-pulldown).

Thanks again.

The link for the 01.25 nightly build seems to be broken...
It's pity, because the 01.20 nightly build has a big problem with some main functions like quit and the 01.16 nightly build doesn't draw all button, e.g. in the forms.

However Thank you very much for such a good job!!

Thanks for keeping Firefox G5 smokin up to date.

Has anyone else noticed this bug with the latest (1/25) build? Whenever I click a link in another app, it switches to firefox but the page isn't loaded - seems to ignore it mostly.

I just recently discovered Firefox and combined with the extensibility, the G5 optimized build is edging out Camino as my preferred browser. Very cool that you are doing this. Currently everything seems to work as with the 1.0 Firefox release, except links in my email program bring up the browser window, but do not go to the page. Firefox just sits there. Also found out that the Wikipedia extension prevents the preferences window from coming up in the G5 build. Bugs? Workarounds?

Thanks.

With the 2.18 build, is anyone else prevented from adding a bookmark by dragging the icon from the URL bar to the sidebar? The only way I can add is by manually hitting the bookmark menu, selecting add bookmark, etc. Bleh to that. :P

I'm pretty sure that the dragging URL problem is a bug - I can reproduce this in the official nightly. I guess we'll have to wait for someone to commit a patch.

I've been been running these G5 optimized builds for about 2 months, and they've been working great! I just downloaded the latest one (3/5/05). This one has a small problem rendering my site ( http://blog.jalenack.com ). The fixed navbar on the left has a whole lot of weird padding and stuff above it..which wasn't there on my previous builds. Also, clicking on a comment textarea or the search field draws a strange box at the top of the page...The second problem is already filed in Bugzilla, but I don't know about the other. Cya, and thanks!

Very quick and very stable. The only problem I have (but I don't think it's peculiar to the G5 build) is that the Browser window sometimes won't accept any text input - including the address bar. My workaround is to have a Text Edit window open; if I type even one letter into Text Edit I can then switch back to FF and all is well again. Peculiar or what?

(iMac G5, MacOS 10.3.8 - and running, among various other third-party programs, Path Finder - could that last be the problem? I'm no Techie so I'm a bit lost on that one.)

Great work, though. Hope you can keep it going. This is exciting stuff!

22 | Cutia said on March 8, 2005 5:56 PM

Treaclecat, are you running Codetek's Virtual Desktop software? If you are then it's an incompatibility with Firefox which is causing your problem. I don't know of any solution other than to click out of Firefox and then back in, as you suggested with Text Edit.

Same issue here. I simply have to change window to get it working correctly. I found the same issue on mass image-saving.

Another bug, but I think it's due to XUL and Mac OS X : iframe and overflow items aren't well-scrolling.

Apart this, these builds are fantastic. You do a great job, thanks !

I'm compiling FF from the trunk right now... Since this last round of buildings (6 days cvs's updating & build) I had not flaws optimizing with -mpowerpc64 flag. Right now I'm trying this optimizations flags: -O3 -funroll-loops -fsched-interblock -falign-loops=16 -falign-jumps=16 -falign-functions=16 -falign-jumps-max-skip=15 -falign-loops-max-skip=15 -mpowerpc-gpopt -ffast-math -fstrict-aliasing -mtune=G5 -mcpu=G5 -mpowerpc64 -faltivec part of -fast gcc optimization option with the exception of -maling-natural and -mdynamic-no-pic cause of broken builds. Nice work dude, you inspired me to try again optimized G5 FF's builds. THX!

Adblock (and all of my other extensions) have been working with no issues here. You may have to wipe out your extensions folder and reinstal them from scratch, but they should work.

99% of the problems I've heard about with these builds can be fixed by recreating your profile or extensions. The reality is these are bleeding edge builds, and there can be wonkiness with installed extensions and profiles... but I can attest that extensions really do work.

Hi,

Thanks for optimized G5 Firefox.

On last nightly build I found bug. I dowwnload Yellow Dog Linux ISO image (about 687 MB) and it can not save on disk. I than go to Safari and repeat same download and Safari corectly save ISO image. Download was direct from YDL server not torrent file.

Once again you are doing great job with this optimization. I now use your builds 90% of time. You only have to fix some font problems-I think that is Java oriented and Firefox will be No.1 browser for Mac.

Regards

B.

I understood the issue I described in my first post.
Actually, Firefox prevents elements below (below in terms of z-axis position) even an empty, transparent block (not a transparent image, which is an opaque object with what happens to be a see-through texture, I mean a truly empty DIV) to receive mouse events, whereas Safari doesn't and sends mouse events to elements unless there is something solid masking them.
Which behavior is correct ? that is unclear in the W3C's papers, though I prefer the way Safari handles it, Firefox's way is just as sensible.
I only wish they would agree.

Unfortunately, I'm having major issues getting Firefox to build properly on my system as of late - I keep getting crashes in cc1plus.exe for some bizarre reason.

This is also hampered by the fact that I have no idea what cc1plus.exe is, or how to work around the problem. :) I've tried doing an archive and install of the OS, and installing a brand new copy of Xcode 1.5, but no go.

At this point, I'm waiting to get 10.4 running on my system and I'm hoping that'll fix the issue I'm seeing. Sorry, folks.

Please Please, post a build of 1.0.3. Your is (almost) the only version I have found on Macintosh that works with the middle-click on my mouse-wheel. I depend on the middle-click for tabbed browsing. :)

I tried both the German language g5 opt. build (WHICH rocks, its REALLY fast), as well as the official 1.0.3. - But none of them supports mouse-wheel-click.

If anyone else has problems with this, then this strange build also works for me:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-1.0+.en-US.mac.dmg

Its 1.0+ (????) though, but its compiled daily, and not g5 optimised.

Since april 3th my builds get broken no matter what optimized flags I use. I think 'our hero' is in troubles too.
BTW, for those of you thinking in Tiger as the blessed solution, I recommend to think in another one: FF don't build at all with tiger's gcc 4.0 neither tiger's gcc 3.3, or at least not to me, the build stops almost inmediately before the ./configure script. No matter what flags or SDK I use, the build brokes...
Let me try tonight... again...
Oh, almost forgot, FF 1.0+ is the trunk's version, 1.0.3 is a branch of it. It's suposed the trunk is up to date without any bugs present in 1.0.3 and, perhaps some many features more.

There weren't any changes in the 20051107 build (compared to previous builds), but the new 20051110 build has a different optimization string that seems to fix the problem, at least for a few people. Give that a go!

Works for me in the 20051113 build - make sure you're running a build from 20051110 or later.

After downloading, would I still need Firefox installed? Or should I just use the Deer Park app and uninstalled Firefox.

When will there eb a final, new G5-Optimized Version of FireFox, now that V1.5 of the "non-optimized" version has been released?

Can you give this newbie a site for Firefox discussions/support/handholding? Can't get themes to download and install. Thanks

Here's the answer to my themes problem: Go to User--Home--Library--Application Support--Firefox, delete the folder and relaunch Firefox. It'll work.

Firefox 1.5 on Tiger freezes the mac, like someone mentioned above, when I visit wikipedia.org. Do I need to get the latest "nightly build" or someting? Thanks if anyone knows...I have to hold the power button down too to unfreeze / reboot the mac. It's an iMac G5.

Just downloaded the Dec20 build of 1.5 for G5. The scrolling arrows don't display properly in the bottom right -- the down-arrow is missing, though if I can hit just the right pixel between the bottom of the up-arrow and the top of the resize box, I can get down-scrolling. The previous build I used (Dec10?) developed the same problem, tho' at first it was ok.

G5 tower, 10.3.9

The latest nightly build that I tried 20060122 for the G5 croaked anytime I tried to bring up Yahoo Mail Beta. Then one based on AJAX. The 1.5 Release seems to be working fine.

The 0122 build shows up as the 0118 build when I get it installed.

Page rendering of the 2-21 build isn't working well. The rendered pages show text that is very small compared to the 1.501 regular release.

Build 20060317 (Bon Echo) drag and drop URLs to bookmark folders in the bookmarks bar is still broken.

Some of my bookmark folder lists are not showing completely (missing the top 4 sites, for example) in build 20060317.

It looks like Bon Echo is the Version 2 code (Deerpark is 1.5). Not one of my extentions passed the compatibility test. Guess I will wait until the extention developers come out with their updates.

Maybe the v1.5 path of your source changed?

"The BonEcho Alpha 1 milestone is the first of many developer milestones on the path to Firefox 2," Mike Schroepfer, vice president of engineering for Mozilla, said in a statement. "We do not recommend that anyone other than developers and testers download Alpha 1, as it is intended for testing purposes only."

The download link for latest build 20060323 is broken, file not found error was reported by the hosting site (University of Adelaide). Perhaps this is due to uptime of the server and time zone difference (accessed in Singapore) ?

I'm curious .. Are you no longer optimizing the nightly deerpark 1.5 builds?

Thanks

Forbin - these are the nightly branch builds - the project name was changed to BonEcho as this will eventually become Firefox 2.0.

Forbin - Firefox 1.5 is released. The next version is 2.0. Thus, these are 2.0 nightlies.

I'm having a strange problem with the 20060406 G5 build. When I click a bookmark item from the menu it won't load until I click it again. And if I click one bookmark (which doesn't load) and then click a second bookmark, the first bookmark will now load. You can continue doing this and the previous thing clicked will always load instead of the current thing clicked. This is only happening in the G5 build. The standard build from mozilla works fine.

I downloaded the 20060413 version and the sidebars don'e work. When I do "view" --> "sidebar" I can't see any options or select anything. Also this version seem to run slower on my 2.5 GHz G5

Just a heads up. The 20060501 build has Places disabled already. Be sure to export your bookmarks with an older build with Places and then re-import with the new build. Sidebar issues should be gone once Places is gone.
