Yet another reason I will never give my money to Future Shop

Inane.

Sign posted in Future Shop DVD section:

DUE TO THE SENSITIVE MATERIAL, FAHRENHEIT 9/11 IS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

PLEASE ASK AN ENTERTAINMENT ASSOCAITE (sic) TO GET YOU A COPY.

Me: Excuse me, why is Fahrenheit 9/11 “available upon request”?

Future Shop Entertainment Associate: Um, because it has sensitive material.

Me: Sensitive material? Can you be a bit more specific? Does your version have an unpleasant cover or something like that?

FSEA: Um, no… but it has sensitive material in it.

Me: Like what?

FSEA: Well, (long pause) it has violence in it.

Me: (points to House of 1000 Corpses DVD on display): You mean like this?

FSEA: That movie rocks! Er, I mean I think we’re supposed to keep it off of the shelf because people might get offended.

Me: Hm. Are there any other movies that have sensitive material that are available upon request?

FSEA: No, I don’t think so.

Me: So is Future Shop starting to voluntarily pull Fahrenheit 9/11 from its shelves because people might become offended? Seems to be kind of a strange policy, don’t you think?

FSEA: Um… (looks blankly). Do you want to buy something or what?

Me: No, thanks.

Thats really, really stupid. Is this at all futureshops? Does anyone else know?

Maybe it's BestBuy, the american giant calling the shots now? I'm debating calling up the number to Futureshop and finding out why.

As if I'd need another reason NOT to shop there... but I'd like to know out of curiosity. Fight the man, Neil.

Wouldn't a few copies places among the zillions of movies there be more inconspicuous than a sign basically advertising the movie right above them all? People are stupid.

You know folks, it all comes down to this: Support your local small business and not the big box stores. I have never had great service in any of these box store places. Unlike the small mom & pop shops where I have always gotten wonderful and friendly service. You may pay a bit more, but you'll support local businesses and hard working people who try to please you. In Box stores, nobody seems to know anything or care. They also drain money away from the lively downtown and sometimes out of this country (Canada). Support the small guy!

This ranks disgustingly high on the Moron and the Self-Censorship scale. It's so ridiculous that I might actually have to go down to Future Shop myself and go against all my internal squirming against that bag of $hit and demand that the DVD be made available on the shelves. Preferably with much needless commotion and chaos.

And as for box stores, where does it stand that I returned the printer I bought from Future Shop to buy it from Costco? ;)

I work at a Futureshop in Ontario and we had all our movies of farenheit 911 out, no 'special requests'. As for the service I agree with you. Most salespeople there are idiots that just want to sell you anything you'll buy. Personally, I only sell stuff that I actually stand behind if I can help it. Maybe that's why i'm becoming a merchendaiser at the end of February...

I work at a Future Shop in Ontario as well. There was no policy to keep that movie off the shelves. They either had some idiot come in and raise a fuss or one of the managers of that particular store needs a Cat scan. As for Eric, I agree there are an awful lot of idiot salespeople but i don't think that is something you find just at Futureshop. As far as big box stores go FS is pretty good. You don't get the turn over of staff like Bestbuy or Wal-mart. Plus, people actually make good money there. In the end, that makes a good economic sense, since salespeople make an economic contribution back to thier community.

Just remember, Future Shop was a small "Mom and Pop" shop with one location in 82. Perhaps it's all the people that decided to shop there at that time that expanded Future Shop to what it is now. Think about it. Future Shop didn't just pop 120 odd stores over night!

i do remember this issues about the sensitative material. we have seen a lot of emails and calls about it. it was the usa who wanted this movie banned or sold as sensitative material. they do not want everyone to see there "dirty laundry" . when you see a tag that states sensitative meterial on it, buy it, may change they way you view things. ppl are so opionated now a days. every little issue now needs to be blown all out of control. shop at future shop or best buy , which are owned by the same big wigs any way. we have ppl calling us every day with stupid little questions like this every day. i tae alot of customer service calls (i work for a call center) we take alot of calls like this, we bend over backwards to get some closure for a customer and they are never satisified UNTIL they get there extra 5-10% off what ever they buy. why dont you just be honest to the cust reps and then they will not laugh at you around the water cooler when you hang up the phone with them.

My experience with Future Shop's misleading advertising (regarding taxing consumers on rebates) has been similarly frustrating, and detailed at the link, above.

it's pretty stupid that they'd try and censor like that. even though Michael Moore censored tons of crap out from his movie. It's total whitewash. Moore missed all the important issues of 9/11. what a jack ass!
