Advent

I’m not quite sure what advent calendars are; they have something to do originally with Roman Catholic church, right? Darn non-religious upbringing. I still don’t understand what Lent is all about, either.

Anyway, I’ve really been enjoying the online advent calendars I’ve found. Specifically:

Any others that ya’ll have found?

(Oh. I learned a little about Advent calendars from this site, which also has a bunch of nice “historical” examples. Still, I’m not sure I understand the religious connection…)

ahh advent! the advent calendar is simply a counter like any other calendar. tradition puts little candies or other goodies in each day's pocket(homemade hanging thing for the wall)and it is mostly for children(though some adults, like me, enjoy making and keeping one). advent=coming. the coming/waiting on the Lord.

secularly Christmas is but a day. to me as a Catholic, it is Christmas for the entire month of december, advent is Christmas..the advent wreath, the jesse tree, the advent calendar, the christmas crib..it's a great big countdown to the Day itself...which is called such because the Mass celebration on this day was called: Christ's Mass. it was simply shortened over time.

and because of that, it is also a season of cleansing, similar to Lent, in that a great feast is to be experienced. so, people do little sacrifices/penances/meditations/good works in order to prepare for it, to put one's mind in a certain way/order. the parallel to be drawn is like any preparations made in order to enjoy or really appreciate something big or exciting.

interesting calendars! i'll have to see what i can find :-)
